Are My Location and Connectivity Choices Connected?
Your business location and connectivity options will always be entangled.
How so?
Simply put, there are new and improved connectivity options becoming available all the time; some are available to us in our current business location and others are “in the pipeline.” In addition to the emerging tech, our current systems are in a state of flux with updates and add-ons coming thick and fast.
How then, do you determine the best connectivity solution based on your location?
Connectivity Solutions – What Are My Options?
If you’ve ever sat in front of a technical guru who is expounding the benefits of GSM versus LTE or fibre versus satellite, then you may – well – have more than a few questions.
Let’s ensure that we’re all on the same virtual page for a moment:
Fibre
A fixed fibre-optic broadband connection makes use of glass or plastic threads to transmit data. Quite literally, this turns an ordinary, everyday connection into an incredible light-speed version of its former self.
GSM
Global System for Mobile (GSM) is a connection which makes use of fast, reliable mobile technology to connect together virtual offices, smartphones, laptops and pretty much anything that can take a SIM.
Satellite
As evident by the name, a satellite connection links your home or office to the rest of the world via satellite.
LTE
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is another mobile connectivity option – only faster and generally cheaper than standard mobile data.
Location, Location, Location?
We understand; you want the fastest and cheapest option available to you in your location. Let’s see what’s best for you then, based on what’s available.
Many of us, especially small business owners, are totally fed up with the mediocre speeds and erratic connection afforded to us by a traditional landline. So, let’s assume for a minute that your trusty copper cables are not an option – what’s the alternative?
City Centre
If your business is set in a major city hub or near to a wealthy residential area, then it’s very likely you’ll have the option of a fibre connection. Fast, reliable and reasonably priced, fibre is an excellent choice for business connectivity.
If your business has a particular need for a dedicated connection, either for speed or security, then this may be a viable option depending on the infrastructure in your location.
Suburbia
What if your location lies outside of a current fibre zone? Perhaps you are in a smaller town, the outlying areas of a city or in a residential area.
If this is the case, then your next best options will be LTE and GSM. Both are mobile technologies, but it would depend largely on your business as to which will work best for you.
For example, if you run a retail outlet then you will certainly require an always-on connection for your card machines to work, which would make a GSM connection ideal. If, however, you run a small home business which is internet-intensive then a dependable and super-fast LTE connection is your best friend.
Remote Areas
South Africa is a vast place; therefore, it stands to reason that neither fibre nor LTE connections are available to some.
However, those involved in farming, mining, civil engineering projects and similar sectors still need to stay connected to the rest of the world.
This is where satellite connectivity really shines and offers a consistent connection with excellent speeds. Obviously, this is not the cheapest selection available, but many are grateful for the link to civilisation that satellite connectivity brings.
